VistaPrint / Moo / AnOther will make you a gazzillion shiny cards for pennies, and you will fuss over the design for days to make it appear hip-yet-business-like and it will look cool I’m sure. You will give out about 20 of these things and put the remaining 180 in a drawer never to be seen again. The ones you actually do give out will be thrown in the trash because everyone uses the same services and gets the same cards and they have no value.

What if someone gave you a card they had literally written themselves in their neatest script with an italic pen and they added a picture of duck smoking a cigar? Personally I would keep that card forever even if I didn’t want what they were selling.

My resignation is in no way related to the release today of Minecraft 1.8 as was suggested by some of my more cynical colleagues.

Robin is on the way to the ER with her dog just to be on the safe side.

Snopes has a good article about grapes, raisins and dogs. I tried to copy and paste some of it, but was unable to. The top of the article has some story about a particular dog, but the bottom part is what all dog owners…

I’m probably getting a dog next week and I had no idea they couldn’t eat raisins. My house is full of discarded raisins.

Scrambled eggs (with cream cheese and spring onions) and smoked salmon on a toasted English muffin.

I often make this (or variations on the theme) as a luxury weekend brunch. I prefer my scrambled eggs to be loose and creamy rather than fluffy and dry, so I break eggs directly into the frying pan (bonus — less work!), roughly scramble them with a spatula, and then cook them slowly with infrequent stirring. Dairy (usually cream cheese or a little light cream) and seasoning goes in at the end, not the beginning — I’ve read that salt added beforehand can toughen the eggs if added beforehand, because it draws water out of the protein cells. The cold-from-the-fridge dairy also helps to arrest the cooking process too, stopping the eggs from drying out. —Rich

Nice looking eggs. I always follow Negativland’s advice, which also uses the dairy-cooling technique to stop them overcooking: http://blogfiles.wfmu.org/JH/2007/08/potatoes/13_Perfect_Scrambled_Eggs.mp3

tj:

This is McDonald’s fuck-wittery not Microsoft’s. Connecting from Windows is just the same as on the Mac UNLESS you have changed your default WiFi settings (overridden IP address, DNS server, etc…). You would have to do the same things if you had overridden your Mac WiFi settings, but McDonald’s are not telling you how.

For a fair comparison you would need to show Mac users how do to this for every version of OS X since 10.0 (Cheetah), which was released at the same time as Windows XP.

roughnightforlulu:

Sunflowers are said to absorb radioactive substances, and the 6,000-square-meter plaza, located on a hillside about 1 kilometer away from the prefectural government offices, is one of the so-called “hot spots” where radiation levels are sporadically higher than other areas.’ - Mainichi Daily News

Samuel Beckett
Playwright, novelist, and Nobel laureate

meets

André the Giant
Gargantuan professional wrestling legend

In 1953, fresh off the success of Waiting for Godot, Beckett bought a plot of land near the hamlet of Molien, in the commune of Ussy-sur-Marne, about forty miles northeast of Paris. There he built a cottage for himself with some help from a group of locals, including a Bulgarian-born farmer named Boris Rousimoff. Over the years, Beckett and Rousimoff became friends and would occasionally get together for card games. Rousimoff had a son, André, known as Dédé, who was something of a physical marvel. By the age of 12, André was over six feet tall and weighed 240 pounds. No school bus could hold him, and his family lacked the means to buy a car big enough to schlep him back and forth to school in Ussy-sur-Marne. Enter Boris’ old card-playing buddy Beckett, who owned a truck and was more than willing to pay his friend back for his help with the cottage by giving a lift to his enormous pituitary case of a son on his drives into town. Years later, when recounting his conversations with Beckett (which he did often), André the Giant revealed that they rarely talked about anything besides cricket.
